Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has donated 10 large water storage tanks to five districts in the Central Region to ease the severe water shortage affecting many communities.
The tanks were handed over to the Gomoa Central, Gomoa West, Gomoa East, Awutu Senya West, and Agona West Assemblies, the hardest hit areas where taps have run dry for weeks. Residents have been compelled to trek long distances for unsafe water, a situation largely caused by illegal mining activities that have polluted rivers and made treatment difficult for Ghana Water Limited.
Presenting the tanks on behalf of the Vice President, Central Regional Minister Mr. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah said the donation was part of a broader effort to fight the crisis. He disclosed that more tanks and boreholes were planned, while assemblies worked to rehabilitate old facilities and construct new ones. Special arrangements, including tanker services, were being made for Senior High Schools to ensure regular water supply.
Mr. Okyere said President John Dramani Mahama remained resolute in tackling galamsey, stressing that illegal miners were being flushed out from water bodies to restore supply. He also raised concerns about water scarcity for livestock, announcing plans to create safe watering points for cattle.
Aside from galamsey, he pointed to destructive farming practices as contributors to the crisis and warned against the illegal diversion of treated water.
Madam Margaret Naana Ackom, Gomoa East DCE, expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiary districts, noting that fire service officers, contractors, and DRIP machines were already being mobilised to deliver emergency support. She urged communities to maintain the tanks properly.
The Vice President’s intervention follows similar efforts last year, when she financed the construction of 10 boreholes for selected districts. The new donation strengthens her agenda to mitigate recurring water shortages and support vulnerable communities.
