President Mahama designates MiDA as Ghana’s focal institution for coordinating international philanthropic partnerships

President John Dramani Mahama has formally designated the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) as the government’s central institution for coordinating philanthropic and grant-based partnerships.

In a letter dated September 19, 2025, and addressed to the Chairperson of MiDA, with copies to the Ministers of Finance and Foreign Affairs, the President cited MiDA’s proven record of technical excellence, fiduciary discipline, and effective delivery as the basis for the new mandate. The move is aimed at streamlining and strengthening Ghana’s engagement with leading global philanthropic entities.

“This designation affirms the Government’s confidence in MiDA’s institutional strength,” the letter stated, pointing to MiDA’s history of successfully implementing large-scale projects, including the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compacts.

Under its expanded role, MiDA will serve as the coordinating body for all government engagements with philanthropic partners, ensuring alignment with national priorities such as the Feed Ghana Programme and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its responsibilities will include managing grant funds, ensuring transparent procurement systems, and aligning philanthropic initiatives with long-term development goals.

The designation specifically tasks MiDA to collaborate with major international partners such as the Open Society Foundation (OSF), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Mastercard Foundation, and similar organisations.

President Mahama has directed MiDA to work closely with the Ministry of Finance, relevant sector ministries, and partner organizations to unlock impactful financing opportunities for Ghana. “We are confident that under your leadership, MiDA will excel in this strategic role,” the President’s letter concluded, expressing optimism about Ghana’s ability to become a trusted global partner in international philanthropy.

The decision is expected to significantly boost Ghana’s capacity to attract and manage international grants, ensuring that partnerships deliver measurable and lasting benefits for the Ghanaian people.
