Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and four other NPP aspirants face vetting for 2026 presidential primary

Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and four other aspirants seeking the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership for the 2026 presidential election will face the party’s vetting committee today, Tuesday, September 23. The vetting process is a critical step designed to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to the NPP’s internal rules.

Dr Bawumia, who served under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, is expected to present his political vision, leadership credentials, and plans to unite the party ahead of the 2026 polls. If cleared by the committee, he and the other aspirants will officially be eligible to contest the party’s flagbearership.

The NPP’s primary race is shaping up to be highly competitive, with Dr Bawumia facing stiff competition from four other contenders. These include Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary; Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Assin Central MP and businessman; Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi; and Hon. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe and former Education Minister.

The vetting committee’s clearance will determine which of the aspirants appear on the ballot, marking a decisive step in the party’s preparations for the 2026 general election.
