Residents protest against filling station construction in Tema Community 11

Residents of Community 11 have taken to the streets in protest against the construction of a filling station in their midst. The project, which commenced a few months ago, has faced opposition from the community due to safety concerns and alleged alterations to the engineering of the main storm drain.

Led by Mr. Kofi Gantor Logah, a member of the community, the protest was sparked by the developer's disregard for the community's appeals regarding safety issues. The developer is accused of using dubious means to acquire approval from regulators, including the , despite strong opposition from residents.

Mr. Logah emphasized that the densely populated neighborhood does not require a filling station, citing safety risks associated with such facilities, especially in residential areas. The protest, marked by residents in mourning attire wielding placards, aimed to draw attention to the potential hazards posed by the construction.

Despite heavy police presence, residents voiced their concerns, calling on regulatory bodies such as the (NPA) to intervene and halt the construction. Mr. Felix Sobreh, the Assembly Member, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the threat to lives posed by the project's realization.

Concerns were raised about the impact on the community's main storm drain, with fears of flooding and potential fuel leaks in the event of heavy rains. Despite notices from the NPA to cease construction, the developer remained adamant, prompting residents to petition additional stakeholders, including and the Fire Service.

Co-convenor Mr. Richard Akomaning highlighted the construction's impact on essential services, including a two-week water shortage due to compromised service lines. He affirmed the community's determination to take necessary actions to safeguard their area from potential risks associated with the filling station construction.
