Government TVET institutions witness surge in enrollment, Minister reports

, the Minister of Education, has revealed a significant increase in enrollment figures at Government Technical and Vocational Education and Training () institutions. According to Adutwum, a total of 60,481 new students have enrolled in various Government institutions for the 2023/2024 academic calendar, marking a substantial rise compared to previous years.

This surge in enrollment brings the total number of students in Government TVET institutions, which offer free education, to 157,681. Adutwum attributes this growth to the realignment of TVET institutions under the , the consolidation of the Free TVET for ALL initiative, and the implementation of the MyTVET campaign aimed at changing perceptions about TVET in the country.

The Minister's remarks were delivered by Prof. Mark Adom Asamoah, Advisor on at the , during the inaugural TVET Symposium and the launch of the Second Edition of the Ghana TVET Report in . The event, held under the theme “Advancing TVET and skills development towards sustainable and decent job creation,” brought together officials from TVET institutions and students.

Adutwum highlighted the government's commitment to transforming TVET, citing policies aimed at curriculum development, infrastructure investment, and teacher training. Additionally, he mentioned the establishment of the Ghana Skills Development Fund (GSDF) in collaboration with development partners. The GSDF aims to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of the skilled workforce and improve the income-earning capacities of various demographic groups, including women, low-income individuals, and People with Disabilities (PWDs).

Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, Director General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), emphasized the Commission's role in developing annual reports on the state of TVET in Ghana. These reports serve as a crucial tool for data collection, policy formulation, and program development, ultimately contributing to the overall enhancement of Ghana's TVET system.
