CAS to announce verdict on George Afriyie's disqualification from GFA presidential race in May

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is set to deliver its judgment on George Afriyie's disqualification from the 2023 (GFA) presidential race in May, according to reports from JoySports.

In an email correspondence dated April 2, 2024, CAS informed JoySports' Muftawu Nabila Abdulai that its decision would be communicated to the concerned parties by the end of April or early May. The email excerpt stated, “This final award is expected at the end of April/beginning of May,” with an invitation to contact CAS again in a month's time.

Although initial sources had suggested the verdict would be delivered on May 13, 2024, CAS's recent communication indicates a more general timeline, aligning with earlier expectations of an early May announcement.

George Afriyie's disqualification from the GFA presidential race occurred in September of the previous year. The GFA Elections Committee cited his failure to meet certain requirements as grounds for his ineligibility. Despite an appeal to the Appeals Committee, challenging the interpretation of candidacy criteria and alleging breaches of natural justice, the decision was upheld.

This outcome led Afriyie to seek recourse at CAS and file for an interlocutory injunction on the election process to maintain the status quo until CAS renders a decision.

Despite Afriyie's legal actions, the GFA proceeded with the elections in in October 2023, where was re-elected unopposed for a second term.

The awaited CAS decision in early May will provide clarity on Afriyie's disqualification and its implications for the GFA presidential race.
