If I take a decision not to fight, am I weak or sensible – Bernard Ahiafor defends his leadership style

Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Appointments Committee, has strongly defended his leadership approach amidst criticism from some members of the Minority, who have questioned his ability to assert control during the vetting of ministerial nominees.

In an interview with Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, February 3, Ahiafor, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, rejected claims that his leadership style has contributed to the controversies surrounding the vetting process. Despite rising tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses, Ahiafor argued that his leadership has been effective in preventing unnecessary conflict and ensuring the smooth vetting of more than 40 nominees.

Responding to accusations from the Deputy Minority Leader about his lack of exposure on the committee, Ahiafor stated that his decisions have been well-informed, strategic, and made with the country’s best interest in mind. “In everything that you do, you get more experience along the line. But I will not say that that was the reason,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of making decisions that serve the greater good.

Ahiafor also addressed the political nature of the vetting process, where disagreements between the Majority and Minority often lead to heightened tensions. He explained that his goal has always been to maintain order and ensure that progress is made, rather than indulging in political confrontations. “If I take a decision not to fight, am I a weak person or a sensible person?” he asked rhetorically, reinforcing his stance that avoiding conflict in favor of efficiency is the right approach.

His comments come amid growing frustrations from the Minority, who have expressed concerns over his handling of the vetting process. However, Ahiafor remains resolute that his approach has helped prevent unnecessary disruptions, allowing the committee to successfully vet over 40 ministerial nominees without chaos.

“If I were combative, we wouldn’t have vetted over 40 ministerial nominees,” he asserted, stressing that his focus has been on delivering results for the country rather than engaging in partisan bickering.
