Following a recent rainstorm that displaced more than 600 people in Koffekrom, a community in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region, the government, through the Municipal Assembly, has provided support to the affected individuals.
Relief items and cash totalling GH¢ 270,000.00 were distributed to alleviate the immediate hardships faced by the victims. The devastating storm, which occurred on March 28, damaged about 60 houses and caused injuries to several people.
Mr. Elijah Adansi-Bonah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), expressed condolences to the victims and acknowledged the unpleasant experience they endured. He highlighted the collaborative efforts with relevant agencies, including NADMO, the Chief, the Disaster Management Committee of Koffekrom, and the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, Mr. Kwaku Kwarteng, to develop a compensation plan for the affected individuals.
The assistance provided included 60 packets of roofing sheets, 450 wood, and 50 bags of cement for those needing to repair their buildings. Additionally, a cash amount of GH¢ 150,000 was disbursed to individuals who had already undertaken roofing repairs. Plans were also announced to settle medical bills for the injured and procure 88 bags of rice for some victims.
Mr. Adansi-Bonah commended the Chief of Abadwum, Professor Amoako Tuffour, Edubiasehene Oguahyia Oduropanin Birikorang I, and other donors who contributed to supporting the victims. He urged further assistance from individuals, groups, and corporate bodies.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Municipal Chief Executive and the government for the prompt intervention. Mr. Solomon Fordjour, a recipient of GHc 10,000.00 cash, shared his relief, stating that the donation helped alleviate the financial burden he faced in repairing his house. Similarly, Madam Regina Asiamah recounted the psychological trauma of losing her belongings but expressed gratitude for the support received.
