Ghana has not granted approval for 14 GM seeds for cultivation – NBA 

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) of Ghana has clarified misconceptions surrounding the approval of genetically modified (GM) products in the country. Contrary to reports, the NBA asserts that it has not granted approval for the cultivation of GM seeds but has registered 14 GM products for importation purposes only.

According to Mr. Eric Amaning Okoree, CEO of NBA, any entity interested in importing GM products for food, feed, or processing purposes must obtain an import permit from the authority. The registered GM products are intended for direct use as food, feed, or processing materials and have not yet been imported into the country.

The statement emphasizes that the NBA operates in accordance with the Biosafety Act, 2011 (Act 831), and international best practices when evaluating applications for GM products. The approval process involves a thorough risk assessment conducted by the NBA Technical Advisory Committee, ensuring the safety of approved GM products.

Importantly, the approved GM products are grains and not seeds intended for planting. They include eight maize and six soybean events, carefully evaluated for their molecular biology, nutritional content, allergenic potential, safety, and other factors. The NBA assures Ghanaians that no adverse findings were identified during the risk assessment process.

Addressing concerns about public participation, the NBA highlights its efforts to engage stakeholders, including farmers, through public consultations and publications in the Ghana Gazette and mainstream media. The authority underscores the importance of adapting to emerging plant breeding technologies to enhance crop improvement and in Ghana.

In response to calls to reject GM seeds, the NBA emphasizes the benefits of embracing these technologies for improved agricultural productivity and . It reaffirms its commitment to implementing Act 831 effectively to safeguard the environment and public health while monitoring the performance of approved GM products in the country.

The statement concludes with an assurance that the NBA will continue to uphold biosafety standards and regulate GM products in Ghana to ensure the well-being of its citizens and the environment.
