Flooding displaces hundreds in Ada East, urgent action needed

Over 300 residents of Azizanya, Kewunor, and Ayigboe communities in have been rendered homeless due to flooding caused by waves from the Volta River. The flooding has submerged over 100 structures, including lodges, drinking spots, and businesses along the riverbank, resulting in significant property damage.

Mr. Gabriel T. Akli, the Assembly member for Azizanya-Kewinor Electoral Area, highlighted the severity of the situation, attributing it to the overflow of the river's banks following spillage from the . He emphasized that while flooding is not uncommon in the area, recent occurrences have been particularly intense, exacerbating the plight of residents.

Efforts to mitigate the flooding's impact have been hindered by administrative challenges, as the District Assembly awaits the election of its presiding member, delaying the formation of committees necessary to address community issues. Mr. Akli advocated for the creation of embankments along the riverbank as a long-term solution to protect the affected communities from future flooding.

Affected residents shared stories of loss, with valuable items such as mattresses, clothing, utensils, and cash washed away by the floodwaters. While appreciative of aid received from various organizations and individuals, they emphasized the need for permanent solutions such as embankment construction to prevent recurring displacement.

In light of the ongoing crisis, urgent action is needed from government authorities, organizations, and individuals to address the immediate needs of displaced residents and implement sustainable measures to safeguard the communities against future flooding events.
