The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in partnership with Media Response, organized a training workshop on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocols for students, youth groups, and associations in the Western North Region. The workshop aimed to enhance participants' understanding of ECOWAS protocols, their operations, and conventions, particularly regarding the movement of goods and persons in the sub-region.
Participants were briefed on the mandate and functions of the Regional Integration Bureau, ECOWAS overview, protocols on free movement, rights of residence and establishment, and the Youth Policy. Mrs. Perpetua Dufu, representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized Ghana's commitment to ECOWAS's economic collaboration to improve living standards in member states.
However, Mrs Dufu expressed concerns about recent military takeovers in the sub-region, which tarnished ECOWAS's credibility. She urged Ghanaians to uphold peace and security, emphasizing the shared responsibility to prevent instability.
Mrs Dufu highlighted ECOWAS protocols promoting democracy, good governance, political stability, and free movement across borders, fostering market access and investment opportunities. She encouraged youth to leverage Ghana's ECOWAS membership for socio-economic advancement.
Mr. Ebenezer Amoah, Chief Director of the Western North Regional Coordinating Council, commended the Ministry for engaging youth on ECOWAS activities. Nana Elluo Panin III, Chair of the programme, raised concerns about illicit drug sales by foreigners and called for action from authorities.
The workshop was attended by students from secondary schools, tertiary institutions, National Service Personnel, and youth groups. It aimed to empower participants to contribute to regional integration and development.
