Fishers urge President Akufo-Addo for premix fuel update in State of the Nation Address

The Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG) has called upon President Nana Addo Dankwa to provide an update on the status of premix fuel supply and distribution during his upcoming State of the Nation Address ().

Scheduled for Tuesday, February 27, 2024, the will serve as a platform for the President to report on the nation's current state and outline the government's agenda for the coming year. Nana Kweigyah, President of CaFGOAG, emphasized the importance of addressing fishers' concerns, particularly regarding the availability of premix fuel, which plays a critical role in supporting fishing activities in coastal regions.

Referring to paragraph 112 of the 2024 budget, which allocated 110,700,000 litres of premix fuel for artisanal fishers, Nana Kweigyah highlighted the disconnect between the government's allocation and the current shortage of premix fuel. Fishers seek clarity on the government's plans to improve supply and distribution channels, essential for sustaining fishing operations.

Additionally, fishers anticipate information on the closed season and proposed cash transfers to mitigate income loss during this period. Nana Kweigyah emphasized the importance of addressing the human rights implications of the closed season, including fishers' rights to social protection and an adequate standard of living.

Proposing unconditional cash transfers to fishers during the closed season, Nana Kweigyah stressed the need for inclusive and efficient assistance measures. He criticized current food distribution methods for their perceived discrimination and inefficiency, advocating for cash transfers as a more effective solution.

Regarding the blue economy, fishers expect President to provide updates on Ghana's Blue Economy Policy and Strategies. Emphasizing the importance of artisanal fishers' participation in the blue economy, Nana Kweigyah urged the government to outline support mechanisms to facilitate their involvement.

As the SONA approaches, fishers await President Akufo-Addo's address with hopes of receiving concrete updates and commitments to address their pressing concerns regarding premix fuel supply, closed season support, and participation in the blue economy.
