GRA begins collection of Emissions Levy for vehicle owners

The (GRA) has officially announced the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112), imposing a levy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles.

The move is part of the government's broader strategy to address greenhouse gas emissions, encourage the adoption of eco-friendly technology, and promote green energy, contributing to improved environmental management and reduced air and water pollution.

Starting from February 1, 2024, all vehicle owners are obligated to pay the Emissions Levy according to the rates outlined in the schedule to Act 1112. The levy amounts are as follows:

  1. Motorcycles & tricycles: GH₵75 per annum
  2. Motor vehicles, buses, and coaches up to 3000 cc: GH₵150 per annum
  3. Motor vehicles, buses, and coaches above 3000 cc, Cargo trucks, and articulated trucks: GH₵300 per annum

Individuals subject to the Emissions Levy must register and make payments exclusively through the ghana.gov platform. According to section 4(4) of Act 1112, entities responsible for issuing road use certificates, such as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority () and other testing centres, must verify levy payment before issuing certificates.

All vehicle owners are urged to take immediate note of this directive and ensure compliance.
