The National Peace Council (NPC) has commended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for responding to its appeal and returning to the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC). IPAC comprises all registered political parties in Ghana and serves as a platform for engagement with the Electoral Commission (EC) on electoral reforms and related matters.
In a statement issued by Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the NPC, the council recalled the NDC's decision not to attend IPAC meetings after the 2020 elections. Concerned stakeholders, including the NPC, sought to facilitate the NDC's return to IPAC, recognizing the importance of its participation in Ghana's democratic and electoral processes.
The NPC engaged with the NDC, the EC, and other stakeholders to encourage the party's return to IPAC. The NDC publicly committed to rejoining IPAC during a stock-taking conference organized by the NPC in December 2023. Subsequently, the NDC actively participated in IPAC meetings on January 22nd and 29th, 2024.
The NPC expressed hope that the NDC's commitment to IPAC would be sustained, contributing to the strengthening of Ghana's democratic credentials. The statement also acknowledged the support of the EC, political parties, and various stakeholders in the electoral management system.
The NPC urged all political stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and consensus-building to ensure free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections in 2024. The council emphasized the importance of patience in the peacebuilding process, calling on the public to support the NPC and its partners in building a sustainable and peaceful country.
