NDC supports change in election date, calls for 2028 implementation: Ghana News

The National Democratic Congress () has thrown its weight behind the proposal to change the date of national elections, with a caveat: implementation should commence in 2028. This development comes in the wake of an (IPAC) meeting convened to discuss the 's plan to shift the election date.

Initially, the had opposed the 's (EC) proposition to move the election date from December 7 to November 7. However, after Monday's IPAC meeting, Dr. Omane Boamah, the NDC's Director of Elections, disclosed a change in stance. He revealed that the party had reached a consensus to allow the EC to proceed with the reform but insisted on delaying implementation until the 2028 election cycle.

Dr. Boamah emphasized, “The agreed that the date of effectiveness should not be 2024. They agreed,” highlighting the purported consensus among parties present at the meeting. He further asserted that the EC merely facilitated the discussion and acknowledged the consensus reached.

Contrary to the NDC's assertion, the New Patriotic Party () refuted claims of unanimity on the timeline for implementation. Evans Nimako, the NPP's Director of Elections, contested the NDC's position, stating that the NPP advocated for implementation in the upcoming . Nimako questioned the NDC's representation of the NPP's stance, asserting, “Do they speak for us?”

Nimako further elaborated, “Others who said the EC should consider changing it said it could be considered in 2028. So what is this position that the NPP supported the position that should be done in the next elections? Do they speak for us? They had said that if elections were to be conducted today, they are going to be the victorious party. And even if EC says that they are bringing it earlier so you win, you are still running away from it.”
