NCCE raises alarm over growing menace of vote-buying ahead of 2024 Elections: Ghana News

The () has voiced its apprehension about the escalating culture of monetization in as Ghana approaches the 2024 General Election.

The commission expressed concern that the problem of vote-buying had transformed into a bidirectional issue, with voters now expecting monetary incentives from politicians.

Speaking at a conference commemorating the 2024 , Ms. Kathleen Addy, Chairperson of the , described the phenomenon of vote-buying as a significant threat to the nation's democracy.

She emphasized the urgent need to address this practice, stating, “If we only elect those who can distribute hard cash and gifts, we run the risk of exposing ourselves to the dark and dirty money readily available in the , and we will sell our country to forces we cannot even begin to imagine.”

The , observed on January 7, is intended to recognize collective efforts to uphold democracy, the rule of law, and constitutional principles.

Ms. Addy stressed the importance of breaking away from the dangerous trend of vote-buying ahead of the upcoming elections.

With the theme “Together we can build Ghana, so get involved,” the NCCE aims to educate citizens extensively, encouraging informed choices in the December 7 polls.

Ms. Addy stated that the commission is committed to reducing voter apathy, increasing citizen participation, and fostering informed decision-making for the collective interest of the people.

Ms. Addy urged voters to reject politicians who incite violence and appealed to political leaders to prioritize the nation's well-being. She also called on the media to refrain from spreading misinformation, hate speech, personal attacks, and divisive language.

Religious leaders, Reverend Dr. Cyril G. K. Fayose and Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, emphasized the importance of safeguarding peace throughout the election process.

Mr. George Amoh, the Executive Secretary of the , urged the media to educate the public on their constitutional rights and responsibilities.
