Ghana will host a high-level side event on reparatory justice in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly Session on 23 September.

The event follows the United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/250, which, according to Ghana, was realised by a coalition of the African Union, CARICOM and the African Diaspora and declared the enslavement of Africans the gravest crime against humanity.

Against this backdrop, Ghana convened the Next Steps Conference in Accra in June this year. The gathering brought together visionaries, scholars and champions of justice to discuss the next steps towards reparatory justice.

Following the Accra Next Steps Conference, Ghana established a High-Level Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, a Global Experts Panel on the Restitution of Cultural Heritage and a Global Legal Panel on Reparatory Justice.

The high-level side event in New York will receive progress reports from the established panels.

The event is also expected to provide an opportunity for a global dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations and in the presence of the international community.

Ghana is urging nations to join the effort and stand in solidarity in the pursuit of justice, restitution and dignity for Africa and people of African descent worldwide.
