Mahama swears in new Independent Fiscal Council

His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in the new Independent Fiscal Council to strengthen Ghana’s economy and restore public financial discipline.

Established under the Public Financial Management (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1136), the five-member independent body is mandated to scrutinise government spending, monitor debt sustainability and ensure transparency in public resource management.

“Fiscal responsibility must not be regarded merely as a statutory requirement; it is a moral obligation to present and future generations,” His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama stated.

He urged the Council to act based on evidence and the national interest, free from political bias.

The members of the Council are Dr. Emmanuel Oteng Kumah, Chair and International Economic Consultant; Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Professor Patrick Opoku Asuming of the University of Ghana Business School; Mr. Leslie Dwight Mensah, Think Tank Representative; and Mr. J. Kweku Bedu-Addo, Public Policy Expert.
