NHIS introduces a digital verification system to reduce fraud

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Osu Klottey District Office has engaged credentialed health service providers on the new Health Facilities Attendance Management System (NEHFAMS), a digital solution being introduced by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The engagement, held during the district’s second quarter stakeholders’ meeting at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, focused on how NEHFAMS will improve member verification, strengthen data integrity and reduce fraud within the NHIS system.

Under the new system, NHIS members will use a four-digit One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC), generated by the member and used by healthcare providers to authenticate patients accessing services.

District Scheme Manager Michael Lamptey said engaging providers before the rollout was important due to their critical role in the implementation and urged them to embrace the new system.

The NHIS MIS Officer, Seth Amponsah, explained that NEHFAMS and OTAC will help validate patient attendance in real time and promote accountability across credentialed health facilities.

During the engagement, providers raised concerns about frequent changes in members’ phone numbers, network challenges, implementation timelines and technical support.

Assistant Public Relations Officer at the Greater Accra Regional Office, Benedicta Nyarko, urged facilities to fully utilise NEHFAMS, saying the tools would improve efficiency, effectiveness, trust and accountability in service delivery.
