England and Argentina will renew one of football’s greatest rivalries when they meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, July 15, at Atlanta Stadium.
A place in Sunday’s final against Spain is at stake as two of the tournament’s heavyweights battle for a spot in the showpiece.

The fixture adds another chapter to a rivalry shaped by decades of memorable World Cup encounters, including Argentina’s controversial 1986 quarter-final victory featuring Diego Maradona’s infamous “Hand of God” goal, England’s 1966 triumph, the dramatic 1998 Round of 16 clash, and David Beckham’s redemption in 2002.
Both teams have reached the semi-finals despite inconsistent performances during the tournament. England advanced after topping their group and overcoming Colombia in the knockout stage, while defending champions Argentina have relied on experience and resilience to reach the last four.
England captain Harry Kane will lead his side against Lionel Messi, who is set to face England for the first time at a FIFA World Cup.
“Facing England will be special,” Messi said ahead of the match, describing England as a football powerhouse.
England legend Sir Geoff Hurst warned against underestimating the Argentine captain.
“You can talk about Messi being past his best, but he’s still performing, he’s still scoring and he’s a big danger,” Hurst said.
Authorities in Atlanta have strengthened security for the match, with separate entry points for England and Argentina supporters and restrictions on politically sensitive displays.
The winner will face Spain in the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
