The government has restored the Achimota Forest Reserve to its original protected status by revoking Executive Instrument (EI) 144, which removed part of the forest from the reserve in 2022.
Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah announced the decision during the Government Accountability Series media briefing on Wednesday, July 15.

He said Cabinet approved the revocation of EI 144 on June 24, 2026, effectively reversing the legal changes that removed about 361.5 acres from the southern section of the reserve and returned the land to the Owoo family.
The Minister said the decision restores the forest’s original classification under the 1927 declaration and reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the Achimota Forest Reserve.
“This is the only last man standing forest cover in Accra, and President Mahama is determined to protect it at all costs,” Mr Buah said.
He noted that the reserve plays a vital role in environmental conservation, improving air quality and serving as an important green buffer for Accra and surrounding communities.
The restoration follows widespread public opposition to the 2022 decision, with environmental groups and civil society organisations calling for the forest’s protected status to be reinstated.
