National Road Safety Authority urges celebrities to champion road safety campaigns: Ghana News

The (NRSA) has called on celebrities to play a key role in promoting responsible behavior on the roads through road safety campaigns. The Authority encourages celebrities to make brief statements in solidarity with road safety before or after their performances.

In a statement issued by the Corporate Affairs Unit, NRSA emphasized the potential impact of celebrities as road safety champions, influencing positive behavior among their followers. The call comes in light of recent road traffic crashes involving well-known personalities in Ghana.

The statement notes incidents involving star and rapper 2PM (known as ‘King of Bars') who recently died in a motorcycle crash and hiplife musician Edem, who faced charges related to a traffic crash resulting in a fatality.

The NRSA sees celebrities as influential figures and aims to leverage their fame to support road safety advocacy efforts. The statement serves as a reminder of past tragedies in the entertainment industry, emphasizing the need for responsible road use.

As the yuletide season, known for increased entertainment events, approaches, the NRSA cautions entertainers, artiste managers, and showbiz personalities to prioritize responsible road use. The statement highlights that an average of 42 road traffic crashes occur daily in Ghana, resulting in six deaths daily.

To address this, the NRSA has launched the “Stop Speeding Campaign” to raise awareness about observing speed limits. The statement emphasizes maximum speed limits of 90kmph, 50kmph, and 30kmph for highways, urban roads, and built-up areas, respectively.

The Authority concludes by reminding motorists, including entertainers, to be vigilant and look out for vulnerable road users, such as children, older people, and persons with disabilities.
