Mahama convenes urgent security meeting over Burkina Faso attack

President John Dramani Mahama has convened an urgent national security meeting following the recent terrorist attack in Burkina Faso that reportedly claimed the lives of several Ghanaians.

The high-level meeting brought together key security chiefs and intelligence officials to assess the evolving situation in the Sahel region and evaluate potential implications for Ghana’s national security.

Discussions focused on border protection, intelligence coordination, and measures to prevent any spillover of extremist violence into Ghanaian territory.

Sources indicate that the President requested detailed briefings from the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, and national intelligence agencies regarding current threat assessments and ongoing security operations, particularly along Ghana’s northern frontier.

The meeting also reviewed contingency plans to safeguard Ghanaian citizens living and working in neighboring countries, especially in high-risk zones affected by insurgent activities.

President Mahama is said to have reiterated government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability within Ghana while strengthening regional cooperation to address shared security threats.

He reportedly directed security agencies to intensify surveillance and enhance collaboration with counterparts across West Africa.

The Burkina Faso attack has renewed concerns about instability in the Sahel and the growing need for coordinated regional responses to terrorism and violent extremism. Further updates are expected as authorities continue monitoring developments.
