Our democracy must never be reduced to vengeance -Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, has cautioned against the use of political power as a tool for retaliation, stressing that Ghana’s democracy must be anchored on justice, accountability, and the rule of law rather than vengeance.

Speaking at a public engagement, Dr. Bawumia underscored the need for political maturity and tolerance, particularly in periods of heightened partisan tension.

He warned that allowing democratic institutions to be influenced by retribution or political score-settling could undermine public trust and weaken the country’s governance framework.

“Our democracy must never be reduced to vengeance,” he stated, urging political actors across the divide to prioritize national unity and institutional integrity over partisan interests.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the strength of Ghana’s democratic system lies in its respect for due process, independent institutions, and peaceful transitions of power.

He noted that while accountability remains essential in any democratic dispensation, it must be pursued within the confines of the law and not through politically motivated actions.

He further called on leaders to promote dialogue, tolerance, and constructive engagement, adding that sustainable development can only be achieved in an atmosphere of stability and mutual respect.

Ghana has long been regarded as one of Africa‘s stable democracies, with successive peaceful transfers of power since 1992.

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks add to ongoing national conversations about governance standards, political responsibility, and the future direction of the country’s democratic institutions.
