The Upper East Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into an armed robbery incident along the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Bawku Division, which led to the death of a police officer on duty.
According to preliminary findings, the incident occurred on Sunday, 8th February 2026, when two police officers travelling towards Zebilla encountered an armed robbery in progress. The assailants reportedly opened fire on the officers upon sighting them, during which one officer was fatally wounded.

Following a distress call, a responding police team rushed the injured officer to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. The deceased officer’s body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending preservation and autopsy.
The Police Command has described the incident as a grave attack on national security and law enforcement personnel. As a result, a special police operation has been initiated to track down and arrest all individuals connected to the robbery and subsequent killing.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it is deploying all necessary resources to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice and to restore safety along the affected stretch of road.
Residents in the area have also been urged to cooperate with the police by providing any relevant information that may aid ongoing investigations.
The Service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and called on the public to remain calm and vigilant as security operations continue in the region.
