Police issue public notice on approved uniforms for private security operators

The Ghana Police Service has issued a public notice to inform the general public and all private security operators of the approved uniforms to be worn by private security personnel across the country.

A notice issued from the Police Service Headquarters in Accra on February 5, 2026, stated that, in accordance with Regulation 12 of the Police Service (Private Security Organizations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571), only specific uniform turnouts have been approved for use by all private security operators and their employees.

The notice, signed by the Director-General in charge of Private Security Organizations, reaffirmed the Police Service’s commitment to regulating private security operations and preventing impersonation or public confusion over security agencies.

According to the Police, approved uniforms include a white long- or short-sleeve shirt worn over ash khaki trousers with white stripes, a cream shirt over brown khaki trousers with cream stripes, and a mauve shirt over maroon trousers with mauve stripes, all with stripes on both sides.

Another approved option is a yellow shirt with ash or grey reflectors across the front and back worn over brown khaki trousers.

This reflective uniform is strictly reserved for personnel operating in mines and oil fields.

The Police cautioned that any other uniform, colour combination, design, or turnout not listed and which resembles the uniforms of any state security agency is considered unauthorized.

Private security operators, including in-house security personnel, have therefore been directed to comply strictly with the approved specifications and desist from wearing uniforms that resemble those of state security agencies.

The statement further warned that offenders will be liable to sanctions as prescribed by law. Members of the public have also been encouraged to familiarize themselves with the approved uniforms and report any suspected violations to the appropriate authorities.
