President John Dramani Mahama will grace the 50th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards as the Special Guest of Honour on Saturday, November 15. The golden jubilee edition of the country’s longest-running sports awards ceremony will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre.
This year’s celebration is themed “Gold and Glory, a call for change in national orientation and investment in sports,” a message that aligns with President Mahama’s longstanding vision of using sports as a strategic tool to elevate Ghana’s global image.

In a statement, the Sports Writers Association of Ghana noted that the milestone event will honour not only current sportsmen and women but also legendary figures who have shaped Ghana’s sporting history. SWAG acknowledged President Mahama’s earlier message of solidarity and congratulations to the Association for its continued commitment to celebrating excellence in Ghanaian sports.
“We are thrilled to have secured the presence of these influential personalities, and we are confident that the event will be a huge success,” the statement added.
The SWAG Awards, established in 1975, have consistently recognised exceptional achievements by Ghanaian athletes and sports officials. This year’s ceremony promises an unforgettable showcase spotlighting individuals whose performances have significantly advanced national sporting excellence.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, SWAG will also confer 50th anniversary ambassadorial awards on selected distinguished personalities.
Among the high-profile guests expected at the event are Mr Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff; Mr Gianni Merlo, President of the Association of International Sports Press (AIPS); Ga Mantse Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II; Gbese Mantse Nii Ayi-Bontey; chief executives of state institutions; legendary sports icons; and several other dignitaries.
