The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has directed the immediate transfer of all police commanders stationed in Ghana’s mining communities as part of a renewed push to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
The directive was announced during a meeting with Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, where the Minister underscored the government’s commitment to ending the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining operations.

“I have ordered the IGP to transfer all Police Commanders in all mining areas and send in new ones. So if you are a regional, divisional, or district police commander serving in mining areas, you will be changed with immediate effect,” Muntaka said.
He added that the newly deployed commanders would be under strict performance monitoring, and those who fail to deliver results within three months would also be replaced.
“The new ones we are taking there will be transferred after three months if they don’t perform. We will keep making changes till we see results,” the Minister declared.
The move is part of the government’s broader strategy to intensify the fight against illegal mining, which continues to ravage water bodies and farmlands across the country.
