During the meeting, Secretary-General Guterres recognized President Mahama’s upcoming chairmanship of the African Union in 2027 and commended Ghana’s proactive leadership role in the West African subregion.

The discussions highlighted regional peace and stability as a top priority, with detailed briefings on Ghana’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to mediate conflicts and restore order in member states of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES).

President Mahama emphasized Ghana’s commitment to supporting continental security, promoting good governance, and leveraging multilateral partnerships to address Africa’s most urgent challenges.

In response, the United Nations pledged its full support to Ghana in preparation for the AU chairmanship, underscoring the importance of coordinated international efforts in advancing peace and stability across the continent.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Secretary-General Guterres presented President Mahama with a special gift-a copy of the UN Charter in all six official UN languages-symbolizing the shared commitment to uphold international law and collective action for Africa’s progress.

This meeting further solidifies Ghana’s role as a key diplomatic actor in Africa and signals the country’s readiness to lead transformative initiatives for peace, security, and democratic governance across the continent.
