President Mahama commissions new Ghana embassy chancery in Addis Ababa

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new Chancery for Ghana’s Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s diplomatic engagement on the African continent.

The newly inaugurated facility symbolizes Ghana’s enduring commitment to multilateralism and its strong support for the vision and objectives of the African Union.

It also reinforces the country’s resolve to deepen bilateral relations with Ethiopia, a key strategic partner and host of the African Union headquarters.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the new Chancery as more than just an infrastructure project, noting that it reflects Ghana’s firm diplomatic posture and growing leadership role within continental affairs.

The commissioning comes at a pivotal time, as President Mahama prepares to assume the Chairmanship of the African Union next year. The development signals Ghana’s readiness to take on greater continental responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to Africa‘s peace, integration, and development agenda.

The project has a decade-long history, with funding arrangements dating back to 2016 under the SG-SSB facility.

Although construction faced delays due to economic challenges, work resumed after the settlement of outstanding Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs), culminating in the completion of the modern diplomatic facility.

The event was attended by Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Gedion Timothewos, whose presence underscored the strong ties between the two nations.

Government officials expressed appreciation to the Ministry’s staff, embassy personnel, the Ethiopian contractor, and the Ghanaian consultant whose efforts ensured the project’s successful completion.

The new Chancery stands as a testament to Ghana’s diplomatic ambition and its continued dedication to strengthening partnerships across Africa and beyond.
