Mahama calls for stronger partnership between traditional authorities and government

President John Dramani Mahama has called for a stronger partnership between traditional authorities and government to deepen development and improve governance at the district level.

Engaging the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs at the Presidency, President Mahama said chiefs are uniquely positioned to support development in their communities and should play a more meaningful role in Ghana’s decentralisation process.

He said proposed reforms under the ongoing review of the 1992 Constitution could further strengthen the participation of traditional rulers in District Assemblies.

President Mahama also encouraged chiefs to work closely with District Chief Executives (DCEs) to ensure that public resources reaching the districts translate into tangible projects and improved services for local communities.

As part of efforts to stimulate economic activity across the country, the President announced plans to establish a 24-hour market in each of Ghana’s 261 districts, providing farmers and traders with expanded opportunities to sell their goods.

He further highlighted Government’s focus on accelerating development in the six newly created regions, including Ahafo, where several road projects have been incorporated into the Big Push programme.

President Mahama said Government will continue to work with traditional authorities as strategic partners in driving economic growth, local development and effective governance.
