Devex ranks Mahama 5th on list of 50 most powerful people in the world

International development media platform Devex has ranked President John Dramani Mahama fifth on its list of the 50 most powerful people in the world, underscoring his growing influence on global development, governance, and international policy conversations.

According to Devex, the ranking reflects President Mahama’s impact beyond Ghana’s borders, particularly his leadership on issues of democracy, economic transformation, peacebuilding, and South-South cooperation.

The list recognises individuals whose decisions and actions significantly shape development priorities, funding flows, and global policy directions.

President Mahama’s position in the top five places him among a select group of global leaders, policymakers, and influential figures driving international development agendas.

Analysts attribute his high ranking to his strong advocacy for African-led solutions, inclusive growth, and reforms aimed at addressing inequality, climate change, and regional security challenges.

Since returning to office, President Mahama has been vocal on the need for fair global financing systems, debt relief for developing countries, and stronger multilateral cooperation.

His engagement at major international forums and summits has reinforced Ghana’s profile as an active and respected voice in global affairs.

Devex noted that Mahama’s leadership style, which combines policy experience with diplomatic engagement, has positioned him as a key interlocutor between Africa and the international development community.

His emphasis on translating political freedom into economic transformation has also resonated widely among development partners.

The ranking has been welcomed by observers in Ghana, who see it as a recognition of the country’s renewed relevance on the global stage.

It also adds to President Mahama’s international credentials at a time when Ghana is seeking to attract investment, deepen trade partnerships, and strengthen its role in regional and global governance.

Devex’s annual list highlights individuals considered most influential in shaping the development sector worldwide, based on factors such as leadership reach, decision-making power, and ability to influence policy and funding outcomes.
