Nigeria: Islamic State claims deadly Adamawa attack as gunmen kill at least 29

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack that killed at least 29 people in Adamawa State, according to a statement released on Telegram.

Gunmen carried out the assault late Sunday in the Guyaku community in Gombi local government area, opening fire sporadically for several hours, killing residents and destroying property.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri confirmed the death toll during a visit to the affected community, where he described the incident as tragic and unacceptable and condoled with bereaved families.

He said the state government is working with security agencies to prevent further attacks and restore normalcy.

While the exact motive remains unclear, the region has faced repeated violence in recent years, including attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups, contributing to ongoing insecurity across rural communities in northeastern Nigeria.
