Mahama arrives in Addis Ababa for AU summit on reparations and justice

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), which is being held from February 15 to 16.

The summit, themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” will focus on advancing reparatory justice and fostering racial healing across the continent.

President Mahama arrived in Ethiopia after attending the Munich Security Conference in Germany. He was received at the Addis Ababa airport by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who earlier participated in the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council (Ministerial Session) from February 12 to 13.

A key highlight of the summit will be the election of a new AU Commission Chairperson, as the current Chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat, is set to step down on February 15. Leading contenders for the position include Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya; Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister; and Richard Randriamandrato, former Foreign Minister of Madagascar.
