Ghana to commemorate UN Day with flag-raising ceremony

Ghana will commemorate this year’s United Nations Day with a series of activities culminating in a flag-raising ceremony at the forecourt of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Accra on October 25.

The Director II of the Multilateral Relations Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mrs Joyce Asamoah-Koranteng, announced the programme during a preparatory meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Ad-Hoc Planning Committee responsible for organising the event.

The committee met to finalise activities for the celebration, which will include a health walk, media engagement, a Model United Nations Assembly by LifeLink Friendship Schools and a photo exhibition before the official flag-raising ceremony.

The ceremony will be addressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana.

Mrs Asamoah-Koranteng, who chaired the meeting, urged members of the planning committee to discharge their responsibilities diligently to ensure a successful celebration.

Ghana will observe this year’s event on the national theme, “Building on the 3Ss – Solidarity, Sustainability and Science – Towards a More Resilient Ghana,” highlighting the importance of science in achieving sustainable national development while promoting greater solidarity within the United Nations system.

The national theme aligns with the official global theme for the 77th anniversary of United Nations Day, “Solutions Through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science,” which also guided discussions during the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the General Assembly, its President, Csaba Kőrösi, reaffirmed his commitment to engaging civil society organisations, researchers, academics, the private sector and development practitioners to promote evidence-based solutions rooted in science and verified information.

United Nations Day is observed annually on October 24 to mark the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, following its ratification by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. The organisation was established to promote international peace and security, foster friendly relations among nations, encourage international cooperation and serve as a platform for harmonising the actions of member states.

The United Nations carries out its mandate through 17 specialised agencies working in areas including health, agriculture, economic development, peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance.

Ghana joined the United Nations on March 8, 1957, two days after attaining independence, and has since played an active role in the organisation, including becoming one of the leading contributors of troops to United Nations peacekeeping operations around the world.
