Ghana must succeed for Africa to succeed – President Tharman applauds Mahama’s leadership

Singapore‘s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership in steering Ghana through economic challenges and prioritising job creation.

“Ghana must succeed for West Africa and Africa to succeed,” President Tharman said, praising President Mahama’s management of the country’s debt challenge while acknowledging that job creation remains a critical priority his administration is actively addressing.

Speaking during bilateral talks in Singapore, President Tharman noted that President Mahama’s keynote at the Africa Singapore Business Forum reflected the strength and promise of Ghana–Singapore relations and underscored the importance of sustainable development as the foundation for long-term prosperity.

On climate collaboration, he highlighted a milestone agreement between the two nations: Singapore is the first Asian country to sign an implementation agreement on carbon credits with Ghana, while Ghana is the first African country to enter such an agreement with Singapore.

Looking ahead, President Tharman outlined priority areas for expanding cooperation, including agribusiness and downstream processing of cashew and cocoa, as well as fintech, cross-border payments, and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.

“We are ready and glad to pursue these opportunities together,” he added, signalling Singapore’s commitment to partner with Ghana in mobilising investment, technology, and skills for inclusive growth.

President John Dramani Mahama is on a three-day State Visit to Singapore, where he will also address a Presidential Business Forum on the final day of his visit.
