EU introduces biometric entry system for travellers, passport stamping phased out

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana has announced the gradual rollout of a new Entry/Exit System (EES) across Schengen member states, replacing manual passport stamping with an automated digital system.

According to the Ministry, the system, established under Regulation (EU) 2017/2226, was introduced on October 12, 2025, and is being implemented in phases at border crossings. Full implementation is expected by April 10, 2026.

The EES is designed to register the entry and exit of third-country nationals, including Ghanaians, travelling to the Schengen Area for short stays. The system will collect personal data such as facial images, fingerprints, travel document details, and records of entry, exit, or refusal of entry.

Authorities say the system aims to improve border control processes and accelerate movement across borders. However, implementation may vary among member states depending on their operational and technical requirements.

The Ministry noted that certain categories of travellers are exempt from the EES. These include non-EU nationals holding residence permits or long-stay visas, individuals with residence cards linked to EU or qualifying non-EU nationals, and persons travelling for specific purposes such as intra-corporate transfers, research, studies, or training.

Additional exemptions apply to individuals with special border privileges, including heads of state, accredited diplomats under certain conditions, cross-border workers, and members of the armed forces travelling under NATO agreements. Other exempt groups include rail crew members, holders of local border traffic permits, and individuals in transit under specific rail travel documents.

Ghanaian travellers to the EU and Schengen Area are being advised to take note of the new system and comply with its requirements.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Ghanaians abroad and urged travellers to remain informed about evolving entry procedures.
