The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree to Professor Margaret Gyapong, Director of the Institute of Health Research, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to health research, leadership and support for vulnerable students.
The university praised Prof. Gyapong for attracting about $5 million in research grants, strengthening research capacity and helping establish the Institute of Health Research as a WHO/TDR satellite training centre for implementation research.

A renowned expert in Medical Anthropology and Epidemiology, she has made significant contributions to malaria, maternal and child health, and neglected tropical diseases, with 116 scientific publications and service on several international health boards.
Prof. Gyapong has received global recognition, including the 2017 Heroines Award and the 2018 European Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) Most Outstanding Female Scientist Award. She donated the €20,000 prize from the latter to establish the UHAS Needy Female Students’ Support Fund.
UHAS said her dedication, excellence and commitment to improving health research and supporting disadvantaged students have enhanced the university’s international reputation. The honorary degree was conferred by Justice Jones Dotse, Chairman of the UHAS Council and a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.
