Methodist University warns students against misconduct at matriculation

The Acting President of the Methodist University College, Very Reverend Professor John David K. Ekem, has cautioned newly admitted students that academic excellence alone will not qualify them for graduation, stressing that good character is equally essential.

Addressing the University’s 22nd Matriculation Ceremony in Accra, he stated that the institution would not award degrees to students who failed to demonstrate discipline and integrity throughout their studies.

“You are forewarned that to earn the degree of the University, you must be disciplined in addition to studying hard,” he said.

The University received 1,072 applications for admission, of which 960 applicants met the entry requirements. A total of 941 students were offered admission, while 925 completed their registration.

Professor Ekem urged students to maintain high standards of conduct, noting that discipline remains a core requirement of university life.

He encouraged responsible use of social media, advising students to use digital platforms for constructive communication rather than activities that could damage their reputation or that of the institution.

The Acting President reminded students that under the University’s regulations, no one is permitted to publish information about the institution without prior approval from the President through the Registrar.

He warned that breaches of the policy would attract disciplinary action.

Professor Ekem also cautioned against academic dishonesty, describing honesty, integrity and the pursuit of truth through honourable means as the foundation of higher education.

He said the University would not tolerate misconduct such as plagiarism or examination malpractice and would take appropriate action against offenders.

The Chairman of the University Council, the Most Reverend Dr Paul K. Boafo, appealed to parents and guardians to support the institution’s mission of promoting academic excellence, morality and service.

He said the University remains committed to nurturing students who embody its values and reiterated that it has zero tolerance for all forms of misconduct.

Dr Boafo added that the institution would not hesitate to sanction any student found to have violated its rules and regulations.
