Veteran Ghanaian Actor Ekow Blankson Dies at 50

Veteran Ghanaian actor and media executive Ekow Blankson has died at the age of 50.

Family sources said he passed away on Monday morning at a hospital in Tema, surrounded by his wife and children.

Blankson was widely respected for his contributions to Ghana’s film and media industries, starring in several acclaimed productions, including Borga, Frozen Emotion, Savannah, In April, Checkmate, Illusions, A Woman Scorned, Pool Party, and Famous.

Beyond acting, he built a distinguished career in media and corporate communications. He held senior leadership roles at TV Africa, Media General, and The Multimedia Group, where he served as Managing Director of Brands and Corporate Communications and General Manager of Luv FM and Nhyira FM. At the time of his passing, he was the Commercial Manager at GhanaWeb.

Blankson also directed and produced Ghanaian films and was recognised for his dedication to the creative arts.

Academically, he earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts and a Diploma in Theatre Arts (Drama) from the University of Ghana, Legon. He also obtained a marketing certificate from the Heineken Global Commerce University in Amsterdam.

In a 2021 interview with YFM, Blankson described his role in Checkmate as the defining moment of his acting career. He credited director Shirley Frimpong-Manso for challenging him to refine his craft, saying the experience helped him become a better actor.

Ekow Blankson is survived by his wife and children. His death marks a significant loss to Ghana’s entertainment and media industries.
