The University of Ghana (UG) has announced that lectures will resume on Monday, February 28, 2022, despite a majority of its University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) members voting against suspending their strike.
In a notice to the university community, management said the decision followed a meeting of the Business and Executive Committee, which approved a revised academic calendar for the 2021/2022 academic year.

The university said the resumption was based on the expectation that UTAG’s branch ratification processes would conclude in support of the National Executive Committee’s decision to suspend the industrial action.
Students welcomed the announcement, expressing relief after weeks of academic inactivity. Many, however, urged the government to address the lecturers’ concerns to prevent further disruptions.
Level 300 student Elia Asante said campus life had been difficult without lectures and called on the government to resolve the dispute permanently.
Other students said the strike had negatively affected academic work, particularly final-year research projects due to the absence of lecturers for supervision.
The announcement follows similar decisions by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which resumed academic activities on February 24, and the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), which scheduled lectures to resume on February 28.
UTAG’s National Executive Committee suspended its six-week strike on February 21 to allow negotiations with the government after an Accra High Court granted an interlocutory injunction sought by the National Labour Commission.
The lecturers had been on strike since January 10, 2022, over what they described as deteriorating conditions of service.
