COMOG calls for unity among Muslims after national consultative meeting

The Coalition of Muslim Organisations Ghana (COMOG) has called on Muslims across the country to promote unity, peaceful coexistence and stronger collaboration within the Muslim community.

The appeal was made after COMOG held its National Muslim Stakeholder Consultative Meeting under the auspices of the Office of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, COMOG said participants discussed a number of issues aimed at strengthening peace and harmony among Muslim communities across Ghana.

The meeting resolved that individual Muslim communities should establish clear systems for selecting Imams, with the agreed procedures to be incorporated into COMOG’s constitution to guide future appointments and minimise disputes.

Participants also agreed that each organisation would nominate a representative to serve on the Board of Governors of the Conference of Regional Chief Imams of Ghana.

The communiqué further announced plans to organise a National Muslim Leadership Conference under the auspices of the National Chief Imam, in collaboration with the National Council of Zongo Chiefs, Islamic denominations and other Muslim organisations.

According to COMOG, the conference is expected to facilitate the establishment of a National Shura Council to promote inclusive leadership and enhance coordination among Islamic institutions in the country.

The coalition stressed the need to build a more inclusive system of Muslim leadership to strengthen unity and representation within the Islamic community.

COMOG also urged the promoters of a proposed Executive Instrument (EI) relating to Muslims in Ghana to ensure transparency throughout the process.

It said the proposal should first be presented to Muslim stakeholder organisations and institutions for consultation and approval before being submitted to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Parliament for consideration.
