President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to introduce a 20% incentive on the basic salaries of health workers who accept postings to deprived and underserved communities.
Speaking at the launch of the Free Primary Healthcare programme at the Fian Health Centre in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District of the Upper West Region, President Mahama said the incentive is aimed at encouraging more health professionals to serve in communities where their expertise is most needed.

He commended young health professionals who have accepted postings to the district, describing their decision as an act of patriotism and commitment to improving healthcare delivery in underserved communities.
President Mahama also urged residents to welcome and support the newly posted health workers, while assuring that discussions are underway to address their needs and working conditions.
As part of efforts to make the Free Primary Healthcare programme effective, President Mahama urged Ghanaians to register for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), keep their cards active and take advantage of regular health screenings, particularly for hypertension and diabetes.
He noted that while the programme would provide treatment for common conditions at the primary level, patients requiring further care may be referred to district hospitals, where an active NHIS membership would help ensure access to treatment.
President Mahama further stressed the importance of early detection, particularly among commercial drivers, to prevent avoidable health emergencies and safeguard passengers and other road users.
