The Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has commenced the second day of her Greater Accra Maternal Mortality Action and Response Programme (MMARP) tour with visits to the Ga West Municipal Health Directorate and Amasaman Municipal Hospital.
The visits focused on assessing maternal healthcare delivery, reviewing the municipality’s maternal mortality burden and identifying practical interventions to improve maternal health outcomes.

The Deputy Minister met with the Member of Parliament for Amasaman Constituency, Hon. Sedem Afenyo, as well as management and staff of the health facilities. Discussions also focused on referral linkages with higher-level facilities and measures to strengthen maternal healthcare services.
She toured the maternity and theatre units of the Amasaman Municipal Hospital to assess the facility’s readiness to manage obstetric emergencies.
During the engagement, health workers highlighted several challenges affecting maternal healthcare delivery, including inadequate diagnostic equipment such as ultrasound scanning and laboratory services, inadequate infrastructure for critical services, the absence of an anaesthesia machine and anaesthetist, and the lack of an institutional ambulance.
According to the health workers, the challenges continue to contribute to delays in referring emergency obstetric cases.
