The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has introduced a business authentication system aimed at protecting its members and customers from growing incidents of internet fraud.

The initiative follows concerns raised by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which has warned the business community to be vigilant against the increasing threat of online fraud targeting businesses and consumers.

AGI is urging its members to conduct thorough background checks before entering into online business transactions to reduce the risk of falling victim to fraudulent schemes.

Speaking on the development, Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Branch of AGI, Tsonam Akpeloo, described internet fraud as an escalating challenge that is undermining confidence in online business transactions.

“The phenomenon of internet fraud has been with us for some time now. But we’re getting to that stage where it is becoming alarming, where it is almost unsafe to transact business online,” he said.

Mr Akpeloo noted that the rise in online fraud had become a major concern for industry and called on businesses and the public to exercise caution when dealing with unfamiliar individuals or companies online.

He said the growing prevalence of internet fraud was eroding trust in Ghanaian businesses and making it more difficult for international partners to confidently engage with local enterprises.

To address the challenge, the AGI has launched the “Kadodo Africa” project, an initiative designed to profile and authenticate businesses operating in Ghana and across Africa.

According to Mr Akpeloo, the project will subject participating businesses to strict verification procedures to assure customers of their credibility and promote confidence in online transactions.

“We are profiling and authenticating Ghanaian and African businesses so that we can guarantee their safety on the internet and encourage more people to patronise their products and services,” he said.

EOCO has also launched a campaign to clamp down on internet fraudsters and strengthen the protection of businesses operating within the country.

The AGI believes the authentication initiative will play a significant role in restoring trust in Ghanaian businesses and creating a safer environment for digital commerce.
