President John Mahama has reaffirmed the government’s two-track plan for the Accra–Kumasi transport corridor, announcing that work on the ongoing dualization of the existing highway will continue while a completely new tolled expressway is constructed alongside it.
He said the current project will not be abandoned under any circumstances and stressed that the dualised alignment will remain an important route for commuters, local travellers, and non-tolled traffic.

He explained that the new expressway will serve users who want a faster connection between the two cities and will also carry heavy-duty trucks, with tolls forming the basis of its funding model.
Significant progress has been recorded on key components of the corridor.
The Ofankor–Nsawam section covers 33.4 kilometres and began in July 2022, with July 2024 as the initial completion date.
The President expressed optimism that the project could be delivered ahead of schedule if current momentum is sustained. Engineers have also reported that the Amasaman Interchange is almost complete.
Chief Resident Engineer Bimpon said work now rests on the ramp leading to Amasaman and described the transformation of the area as remarkable.
He noted that the site was once filled with structures that delayed work through lengthy compensation processes and court cases, delays that have now been resolved to create the clear space the team needed.
These projects form part of the government’s “Big Push” initiative, which seeks to complete all associated works within a two-year period. President Mahama has already set up a monitoring mechanism at the presidency to track progress and ensure full accountability.
He commended both consultants and contractors for their efforts and urged them to maintain the pace of work.
The President stressed that both the existing dualised highway and the new expressway are essential to Ghana’s long-term transport network. He said the dual approach will secure a reliable route for everyday users while providing a premium, faster option for commercial transport and long-haul movement between Accra and Kumasi.
