Rotary Club of Navrongo donates GH₵500,000 ICU equipment to WMH

By Anthony Adongo Apubeo

Navrongo (U/E), Aug. 12, GNA – The Rotary Club of Navrongo has donated a complete set of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) equipment worth about GH₵500,000 to the War Memorial Hospital (WMH) in Navrongo to improve emergency healthcare delivery.

The donation forms part of the Club’s ICU Support Project, launched on August 10, 2024, with an initial equipment cost estimate of GH₵112,000.

The package includes a modern ICU ventilator, fully electric automated hospital beds with remote controls, a hospital syringe pump, a biphasic defibrillator, a BG-800A blood gas analyser, a BKE auto-loader serum electrolyte analyser, a KT-SP750 infusion pump, and a 12.1-inch multi-parameter ICU patient monitor.

In addition, the Club is constructing an ICU block on the hospital premises to house the equipment and provide a conducive working environment for health professionals.

The War Memorial Hospital serves as a referral centre for the western enclave of the Upper East Region—including the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, Kassena-Nankana West District, Builsa South District, Builsa North Municipality—and neighbouring Burkina Faso. However, the hospital has for years lacked ICU facilities, forcing constant referrals to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital and the Tamale Teaching Hospital, which often delayed critical care.

Dr. Dennis Chirawurah, Charter President of the Rotary Club of Navrongo, said the equipment would significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver emergency and critical health services. He expressed gratitude to members of the Club, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) for funding the purchase and supporting the construction of the ICU block.

He also acknowledged the role of Mr. Michael Luguje, immediate past Director General of GPHA, whose personal intervention facilitated the clearing and transportation of the equipment. Dr. Chirawurah appealed to the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly and local banks to support completion of the building, stressing that the facility’s readiness was key to optimising use of the equipment.

Upper East Regional Health Director, Dr. Braimah Baba Abubakari, commended the Rotary Club for the initiative, noting that WMH has been selected by the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons as one of the district hospitals for training. He said the new ICU facility would significantly strengthen this mandate.

Receiving the items, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Abraham Baba Tuiamu Titigah, described the donation as a major boost to service delivery, enabling treatment of cases locally that would otherwise require referrals. He pledged to ensure the equipment is used effectively to improve patient outcomes.

Kassena-Nankana Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Faustina Akeyom Abulu, lauded the Rotary Club’s gesture, describing it as aligned with the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector. Paramount Chief of the Navrongo Traditional Area, Pe Denis Belinia Aniakwa Adda Asagpare II, also commended the initiative and appealed for continued support to fully equip and resource the hospital.
