Oti Region: police foil major narcotics smuggling attempt, reject GHS80,000 bribe

The Ghana Police Service in the Oti Region has successfully intercepted a large consignment of suspected narcotic substances and rejected an alleged GHS80,000 bribe offered in a bid to secure the suspect’s release.

According to regional police sources, officers acting on intelligence mounted an operation along a key transit route within the region, where they stopped and searched a vehicle suspected to be transporting illegal drugs.

During the search, officers reportedly discovered a substantial quantity of substances believed to be narcotics, concealed in the vehicle.

Preliminary investigations suggest the consignment was being transported across regional or possibly cross-border routes. The suspect was immediately arrested and taken into custody for further interrogation.

In an attempt to obstruct justice, the suspect allegedly offered officers GHS80,000 in cash to facilitate his release and prevent prosecution. However, the officers firmly rejected the offer and proceeded with the arrest, reinforcing the Service’s stance against corruption.

Police authorities have commended the professionalism and integrity displayed by the officers involved, describing their actions as a clear demonstration of discipline and commitment to upholding the law.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned before court after investigations are completed, while the seized substances will undergo forensic examination to confirm their composition and weight.

The operation highlights intensified efforts by security agencies to clamp down on narcotics trafficking and related criminal networks within the region and across Ghana.
