The President declares July 10 and 11 as National General Cleaning Days in flood-hit regions

President John Dramani Mahama has declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods.

The Presidency announced the decision in a statement issued on Monday, July 6, 2026, under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The two-day exercise, themed “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods,” aims to mobilise citizens to clean their communities, protect the environment and reduce the risk of further flooding.

The President has directed all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and Heads of Public Institutions, to actively participate in the exercise by leading cleanup activities in their respective communities.

According to the Presidency, personnel from the security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will begin the cleanup on Friday, July 10. The general public will join the exercise on Saturday, July 11.

The cleanup will focus on desilting choked drains to improve water flow ahead of expected heavy rains, sweeping and clearing sand, weeds and debris from major roads and highways, and cleaning public spaces, including markets, lorry parks, recreational parks and communal waste collection points.

The Presidency described the exercise as a critical intervention, noting that indiscriminate littering and plastic pollution have contributed to blocked drainage systems and recurring floods that destroy property and claim lives.

All MMDAs have been directed to work with waste management companies to provide waste trucks, gloves, shovels and other cleaning equipment at designated collection points.

The assemblies have also been instructed to ensure that silt and collected refuse are removed immediately to prevent them from being washed back into drains.

The statement called on all citizens to participate in the exercise, stressing the need for collective action to keep communities clean and safeguard lives.
