Parliament on Tuesday approved budget estimates exceeding GHS 5.3 billion for the Ministry of Roads and Highways, covering expenditures through December 31, 2026, in a move expected to significantly enhance road networks nationwide.
The allocation aims to improve mobility for citizens and facilitate socio-economic activities across the country.

The approval followed the presentation of a report by Mr Isaac Adjei Mensah, Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee, who highlighted that 137 staff vacancies across four agencies under the Ministry would be filled in the 2026 financial year.
He further projected that ongoing and new road contracts would create approximately 500,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to employment growth and broader economic development.
Despite the positive outlook, concerns were raised by Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, regarding the non-constitution of the Board for the Road Fund.
He cautioned that the absence of the Board is delaying payments to some contractors, a situation he described as detrimental to the timely execution of road projects.
The parliamentary approval represents a major step in the government’s efforts to expand and modernise Ghana’s road infrastructure, even as stakeholders continue to advocate for stronger institutional frameworks to ensure effective implementation and accountability in road development projects.
